Mainline IRC with prax0r

If you're anything like me, the 12 - 20 hours you spend in front of your computer is just. not. enough. You want to be sure that every time the internet speaks about something you care about, you hear. Well, friend, your lucky day has arrived.

Introducing prax0r, the irssi script that makes sure that you, the net-symbiont, can always get your fix. It's a party on your phone (or your inbox) and everyone's invited, yeah! With prax0r, when somebody private messages you or uses words you have chosen to highlight in any channel you are in, you will receive an email (or sms) of configurable length letting you know what just happened.

So, I assume that since you are an übergeek you have the following setup for connecting to IRC:

  • Your colo box at some slick 3-character domain runs irssi inside of a screen and you are connected to somewhere between 30 and 3000 channels on 16 networks. Of course, this script is so leat it will work even if you are only in one channel on one network. Or no channels on a million networks.
  • You know you might also be forced into using a graphical user interface (a "gooey") at some point and therefore use the proxy module included with irssi. This behavior is not required, but is supported for automatic away-detection.

Installation at this point is quite simple:

  • Copy the prax0r script into your irssi scripts directory, .irssi/scripts.
  • From irssi load the script, /run prax0r.pl
  • Configure the settings from irssi... you can find them at the top of the script.

Rokenrol!

P.S. While locating an image to use for this post, I came across this impressive photograph.
